Package: f-spot
Version: 0.2.1-1.1
Severity: normal

The F-Spot Import function works fine on a small photo collection, but
when run on a large (> 200 000 pictures) collection, it doesn't perform
very well. Selecting the external USB drive that holds the photo
collection blocks the Import interface for several minutes, after which
the progress bar starts moving at approximately 1000 images/minute.

I imagine that this is because F-Spot opens each file, creates a thumbnail
for the Import dialog, and perhaps calculates some metadata, but this
operation could well be "lazy" and/or run in the background. I don't
need to see all those thumbnails at once (or at all, for the most part).

Import seems to be I/O bound and I understand that the speed of my disks
is what is holding things back, but the operation could be performed
without pre-loading all this information. I would like to just import
all the photos and start using F-Spot. A background process could start
making thumbnails and inserting metadata into the backend database while
I'm looking at the images that have already been processed. Placeholders
could be used for the images that haven't yet been processed. On access
of such a placeholder, the background process could temporarily suspend
its batch activity and process the image I'm trying to access.

Of course, this amount of photos may be more than the intended maximum
of this program, and I should perhaps use something else. However, all
of these photos have been shot by me over a period of five years, and
I haven't been working as a professional during that time. So it's
conceivable that someone might have a collection of hundreds of
thousands of images and still be a regular user.
