I'm now seeing this, too. I don't know why I didn't before, as I run
unstable on my home box.

Yes, I've checked my font paths; both in xorg.conf and fs/config, they
use the new paths.

Here's the truly interesting part: if I switch from gdm to slim for
my login manager, the problem goes away, everything displays fine.
Switching back brings the problem back. I've also done this with a
completely new user, no .emacs file or any other customization, and it
reproduces exactly with gdm, works fine with slim.

Oh, and I *don't* get any error messages about fonts (except for
being unable to find cyrillic stuff, which is not new.) I've check
in the terminal, in ~/.xsession-errors, /var/log/Xorg.0.log,
/var/log/gdm/:0.log. I'd be happy to look in other places, or otherwise
help track this down.

Regards,
Steve
