I did that, and the output is attached.

Nothing was attached :-)

Now, interestingly enough, when it reaches this point
(below), the process is unkillable.  I tried with
^C, kill -1 and kill -9 (!), and the process did not
terminate until the palm pilot timed out.

So I would suspect a bug in the Linux kernel itself. Can you try with the Etch kernel (2.6.18) instead of the 2.6.20-1-686 you are using?
