Unfortunately I was too slow to capture the output yesterday. In
short and from what I still got:

# aptitude install leafnode=2.0.0.alpha20070108a-1

/var/log/aptitude:

But I think I can reproduce the error of dpkg --configure:
Using fetchnews from experimental and the filters file from the
unstable source package (which looks like what I remember to have had
before I changed it) I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/news/leafnode# cat filters
# Filters file for applyfilter.
# Here are some sample filters:
#^Newsgroups:.*[, ]alt.flame$
#^Newsgroups:.*[, ]alt.flame,

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/news/leafnode# fetchnews -vv
/etc/news/leafnode/filters: Cannot parse line 5: " "
filterfile /etc/news/leafnode/filters did not contain any valid patterns
fetchnews: Cannot read filterfile /etc/news/leafnode/filters, aborting.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/news/leafnode#

postinst calls fetchnew without -vv obviously, then the only output is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/news/leafnode# fetchnews
fetchnews: Cannot read filterfile /etc/news/leafnode/filters, aborting.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/news/leafnode#

That was the exact error I got yesterday.

One more test:
If I remove the empty line 5 from filters I get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/news/leafnode# fetchnews -vv
filterfile /etc/news/leafnode/filters did not contain any valid patterns
fetchnews mode: get articles, get headers, get bodies, post articles
found 0 articles in in.coming.
[..]

Summary:
fetchnews from experimental, called from postinst, stumbles over the
empty line 5 in unstable's default filter file.
