Another comment:

If someone just wants to save space on their own machine, try fslint, which 
can turn duplicate files into hardlinks.

This doesn't help for packaging, because you can't package hardlinks. 

To address this bug, I am not really too interested in invasive changes that 
require too much knowledge about how the tree looks. It changes some every 
version, and right now I try to assume very little about the upstream 
packaging, except where I have to.

Now... if someone wants to point out (or write) a tool that can 
automatically identify duplicate files, say with fdupes, and turn them into 
*symlinks* instead of hardlinks like fslint does, I'd probably be okay with 
having the package builder run that against the target tree before packing 
things up.
