That is .. bizarre.  Running the script as root with the argument
'start' is exactly how init runs it when the system is coming up.  Do
you do anything particular to your environment (e.g., network mount a
share afer logon that could affect this, anything like that).

Thank you for this, unfortunately all it tells me is that
start-stop-daemon exits 1, indicating failure.
