When opening an Staroffice 5.2 (.sdw), the application presents the user with a menu of file format choices. After selecting a suitable format, the program refuses to import the file with the message: "General Input/Output error". There is a lot of discussion of "General Input/Output error" on the Internet, which leads the search for causes in wrong direction. NFS / Samba file locking issues seem to be the common cause for this message.
