Hi,

Is this still a problem with GTK 2.10? 

If so, can you see if you can figure out if it's a problem with a
specific font or not? I think the default is simply to use sans-serif.
Depending on the font packages installed, you might end up with a not so
so great font. I have for example seen a few bugs with the Bitstream
Vera fonts.

Try installing and setting DejaVu Sans, (package ttf-dejavu), I think
the gtkrc config should be set to one of those, but I'm not sure which
one.
