this is a long standing problem. to sum up quickly: mge-shut is for serial HID devices, and talks the same protocol as their USB friends. But on a serial line at 2400 b ! And this is far much verbose than in any other nut driver (except for newhidups which is the USB one!)...
I'm currently working on this point too, and it will be corrected in nut 2.0.2.
