See #422729 and #419151.  One affects sid, the other affects testing.  You can
still get a working grub, but no update-grub.

Also note that the new update-grub that has the features you want is in sid
only.

So you basicaly can wait for that i386 hardware or help us debugging
#422729 ;-)
