I recall there was a black X in the middle of the screen that was pretty persistent. A lot of googling eventually led me to a way to get rid of it, which I no longer remember :(. The machine is now Etch/Xorg, so I can no longer test for this problem. With Sarge/X11 going to bit heaven, it's probably time to close this bug.
