I've just experienced this problem when trying to report a bug against icedove which has many dependencies and therefore a very long URL for gmail. Looks like there is indeed a length restriction for URLs.
Unfortunately there is nothing I can do so I guess I have to disable gmail support again until I found another solution. Maybe gmail has some API to call the composer with very long prefilled text?
