Whichever way you want to go is probably fine. I just have to note that bincimap-run and mailutils-imap4d are not particularly serious IMAP servers, in that they don't support other extensions that are now 7 years old. But I can imagine that might be enough to give you pause. If you can either a) advise the admin to enable it in the case where the IMAP server is localhost, or b) mention that any recent IMAP server supports it for Western locales, that would be helpful by itself. I happen to already know this, so it no longer hugely helps me, but I am trying to save others the effort of researching why it takes so long to load a large IMAP folder.
