Actually, as it turns out the proposed solution I described is wrong. It prevents installing security updates !! So, as of this time I am not aware of a solution. If it exists, it is very well hidden. I consider myself a relatively experienced Debian user (not to mention a fan :-), and yet I can't figure out how to configure my system to do what _should be the default_ (!) - pick packages only from one release.

About a week after Etch release, my system _again_ got upgraded halfway to Sid because I happened to update in the middle of my mirror's repository switchover. I've become used to (and have great admiration for) apt's way of warning about proposed changes that may possibly have major consequences for the entire system, but sadly it seems this hasn't been integrated yet into other tools like update-notifier and synaptic.
