I don't want cupsys. I want lpr.

Still, it is a bug, when the update from Sarge to Etch fails at the printing function; actually deleting the device and making it necessary to add the module (which had been there before). It might be your daily bread as maintainer, but it is not the usual item to be done by the user.
AFAIK, there was none such message at the upgrade.

No, I am afraid, a work-around solution is not the resolution of a bug.
In 2007, when a user plugs a printer, we don't want to require him / her to 'modprobe'.
