This behavior is caused by the MatchParen plugin which was introduced in vim7 and (as all plugins) is run by default. The documentation for the plugin (:help matchparen) describes how to disable loading the plugin. As for the bad syntax highlighting, there are always going to be problems with syntx highlighting in terminals since they have a limited number of available colors. You may be able to find a suitable change to the syntax highlighting that works for your situation but I'm fairly certain that it's improbable to find a solution that will avoid any bad syntax highlighting in all circumstances. As such, I'm marking this bug wontfix, but not closing it so people will hopefully see this if they experience a similar situation.
