It would have made sense to replace pon/poff with ifup/ifdown five years
ago.  But before the transition could be implemented, ifupdown's
handling of PPP interfaces would have had to be fixed.  That work was
never done.  (Or rather, the code never made it into the official
package.  The fact that the package was never fixed, despite the fact
that there were several people who wanted to do the work, is a prime
example of Debian's flawed organisation.)  Now it is too late -- not
only is the heyday of dialup connections long past, but ifupdown itself
is nearing the end of its period of usefulness.
