The big difference in gnome-control-center between 2.14 and 2.16/2.18
when it comes to sound is the new gstreamer sound profiles. I don't know
if it can effect esound though. I guess you already tried to play around
with the settings?

Another idea could be to try libesd-alsa0 instead of libesd0.
Will try tonight ang let you know.

If this doesn't give any results I suggest waiting for the rest of GNOME
2.18 and then contacting upstream.
I have upgraded another machine this morning as the new version hit unstable last night, and I notice the same behaviour (totally different hardware).

I am quite surprised you are not able to reproduce this. I will also try to dreate a new user with the new version, just in case...
