Sorry, it actually DOESN'T affect the volume of capture. Turns
out that what I did every time on capture is 
1) enable the microphone source switch (through the KDE mixer)
(which was needed and worked)
2) raised the capture volume through the mixer (which didn't have
any effect!)
(I never did just one of the 2!)
3) the actual capture volume, as set up in the alsamixer, was high up
which caused the capture to work

You are absolutely correct. It looks like a kmix/kmixctrl bug.
I'll reassign/rename it now. So the problem is that the kmix mixture
control is unrelated to the real (alsamixer) mixture control.
