This monitor detection problem is apparently known upstream. To workaround it, could you try disabling the LVDS output with xrandr --output VGA --off (not sure it will work but we never know...) and see whether gnome-screensaver works fine then? I am pretty sure there's also a bug in gnome-screensaver. It was working fine on my laptop today. However, I just plugged a external VGA monitor and got gnome-screensaver to display a black screen as you described.
