Both stations run lenny. IIRC there's a 32 vs 64bit issue on sparc64 w/ 32bit userland that affects SCSI I/O or ioctls. I'm not sure I remember the specifics right now, but that does ring a bell to me. I'm pretty sure this problem has already been brought up in the past on the sane-devel mailing list. If you have some time to spare to do some research on that, it'd help a lot. Otherwise I'll take a look whenever possible.
