I'm not having any trouble opening *.JPG files, from nautilus as well as from as eog. We discussed that with other developers, and wondered if you could provide a zip or tgz of "/usr/share/mime/packages" on your system? (This is done with "tar cvzf packages.tgz /usr/share/mime/packages".) Please send the tarball in this bug report.
