The part that fails is a comparison of a runlevel query that results in "N 2"
instead of "2":

Moving r=${r#*\ } to remove the N before the comparison solves my problem, but
may not generalize.
Incidentally, I can't tell whether dbus functionality is affected; it may not
be.
