You are right, ignoring the only composing tab would not fix the issue
but simply open another bug.  Anyway, I don't think that the current
behaviour is a very good idea; for me, the problem is that the user has
to switch to the pointing device if he wants to activate another contact
if the current one is typing.  To be honest, I have no idea how to
resolve the problem completely.  Because the feature depends on an
option and can easily be deactivated, you may choose to close this bug
if you also cannot think of a creative and perfect solution ;-)
