You have an open gnome-terminal with its window not fully enlarged, and you time a command longer than a line. For example: if in your gnome terminal 80 chars fit, you type a longest-than-80-chars line, i.e.: wget http://olpc.download.redhat.com/olpc/streams/sdk/build1/livecd/olpc-redhat-stream-sdk-livecd.iso While the command is being executed you enlarge the gnome-terminal window, either dragging the border with the mouse or maximizing it. Then you wait for the command to stop or you stop it. Now, if you hit up-arrow to go back to that previous command, the line receives a CR without a LF at char 80.
