If you have two volumegroups with the same name then vgrename helpfully shows you the UUIDs and suggests that it is necessary to refer to the vg by UUID. However, there is no hint as to how to do this. There is no documented option for passing the vg UUID to vgrename.
2. The vgchange man page claims that the --available option "Controls the availability of the logical volumes in the volume group for input/output. In other words, makes the logical volumes known/unknown to the kernel." However, I could not get this to work. This option does work as documented when used with _LV_change. The documentation for vgchange needs to be updated.
