Machine: IBM Thinkpad 600E Processor: Pentium II Memory: 160MB Partitions: Base System Installation Checklist: [O]=OK, [E]=Error Initial boot: [O] Detect network card: [O] Configure network: [E] - accepts static IP, but isn't actually working (see below) Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Clock/timezone setup: [O] User/password setup: [O] Install base system: [O] Configure Package Mgr: [E] - fails because network interface not working Install tasks: [ ] Install boot loader: [ ] Overall install: [ ] Comments/Problems: Network interface does not work. My card is PCMCIA Xircom Re-100, driven by the xirc2ps_cs module. "Configure network" accepted static IP (192.168.1.202), but at "configure the package manager" I get "Bad Archive Mirror" for all mirrors. To further diagnose, I choose "execute a shell" and try to ping the gateway: # /target/bin/ping 192.168.1.201 PING 192.168.1.201 (192.168.1.201) 56(84) bytes of data. >From 192.168.1.202 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable [SNIP] --- 192.168.1.201 ping statistics --- 9 packets transmitted, 0 received, +6 errors, 100% packet loss, time 7948bn, pipe 3 To further investigate, I ran tcpdump on the gateway machine (192.168.1.201) while pinging from the problem machine (192.168.1.202): # tcpdump -i eth0 22:40:29.993733 arp who-has 192.168.1.201 tell 192.168.1.202 22:40:29.993799 arp reply 192.168.1.201 is-at 00:04:75:80:96:6a 22:40:30.993910 arp who-has 192.168.1.201 tell 192.168.1.202 22:40:30.993965 arp reply 192.168.1.201 is-at 00:04:75:80:96:6a 22:40:31.993977 arp who-has 192.168.1.201 tell 192.168.1.202 22:40:31.994033 arp reply 192.168.1.201 is-at 00:04:75:80:96:6a [etc.] To me this looks like the problem machine (192.168.1.202) can transmit arp-who-has packets to the gateway machine, but cannot receive arp-reply packets. With the Sarge Netinst CD I can follow the exact same steps, except it works, and is able to ping, install, etc. Perhaps the difference in kernel versions is to blame? My Sarge Netinst CD which works runs kernel 2.6.8; my Etch Netinst CD which doesn't work runs kernel 2.6.18. ===== Extra Information ==== # lspcmcia -v Socket 0 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:02.0) Configuration: state: on ready: yes Socket 1 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:02.1) Configuration: state: on ready: yes Voltage: 5.0V Vcc: 5.0V Vpp: 0.0V Socket 1 Device 0: [xirc2ps_cs] (bus ID: 1.0) Configuration: state: on Product Name: Xircom CreditCard 10/100 CE3-10/100 1.00 Identification: manf_id: 0x0105 card_id 0x010a function: 6 (network) prod_id(1): "Xircom" (0x2e3ee845) prod_id(2): "CreditCard 10/100" (0x625e0f5d) prod_id(3): "CE3-10/100" (0x0ec0ac37) prod_id(4): "1.00" (0x83dbf271) # lspci -nn 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge [8086:7190] (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge [8086:7191] (rev 03) 00:02.0 CardBus bridge [0607]: Texas Instruments PCI1251A [104c:ac1d] 00:02.1 CardBus bridge [0607]: Texas Instruments PCI1251A [104c:ac1d] 00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Cirrus Logic CS 4610/11 [CrystalClear SoundFusian Audio Accelerator] [1013:6001] (rev 01) 00:07.0 Bridge [0680]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA [8086:7110] (rev 02) 00:07.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE [8086:7111] (rev 01) 00:07.2 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB [8086:7112] (rev 01) 00:07.3 Bridge [0680]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI [8086:7113] (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Neomagic Corporation NM2200 [MagicGraph 256AV] [10c8:0005] (rev 12) ____________________________________________________________________________________ No need to miss a message.
