I've checked both these values and they're set to 0.
Given all the reading I've done, I'm getting the feeling that this issue
is likely to lie elsewhere.
Hmmm, but you said that the problem went away if you uninstalled
laptop-mode-tools?

No worries about that -- if there's some weird interaction going on I'd
