Gamin was not working for NFS diskless clients. KDE would not show items saved to the desktop, client's menu would not update after adding programs. /etc/gamin/gaminrc had "fsset nfs poll 10". It appears as if gamin over nfs requires libgamin-dev. As soon as I installed libgamin-dev fam started working properly in KDE.
