Hmm. That should happen only when rootfs != 255, so is caused by (one of
the) other problems, I guess.

Hmm - still this odd message. What happens if you try similar command
from within your chroot (using lessdisks-chroot)?

I am not sure but if NFS root is mounted at this point maybe you have
some confusing info in /etc/fstab of your chroot?

Anyway, maybe it helps changing /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf within the
chroot to "ROOT=" (that is, not "ROOT=probe").

This - and similar onesw after that - may be due to devfsd not installed
in the chroot.
