This bug bit me at a customer site today - a user logged in successfully with capslock on and ended up with an empty list of groups, breaking a range of local apps.
I note that the bug has been open for over 2 years: if there is no intention to fix it I'd like to raise a bug on libpam-ldap, since IMO the major issue is that these two packages, which work closely together, exhibit very different behaviours in this regard.
