After I installed xutils, .xsession-errors didn't mention sessreg failing, but the same problem persisted, now blaming lack of permission (I think I had, but that's beside the point). Anyway, I then installed and ran xdm, which worked fine. Afterwards I ran gdm again and it was somehow fixed. I still don't know what the problem was, but it's now fixed. Sorry for wasting your time.
