I upgraded all installed gstreamer related packages to experimental: gstreamer0.10-alsa gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-x libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 libgstreamer-plugins-pulse0.10-0 libgstreamer0.10-0 Now both files have a correct umlaut. After moving away my rhythmdb.xml file and restarting rhythmbox, so that it creates a new rhythmdb.xml for my library, the files that had broken characters before now look correct.
