You can close this bug: It turns out it was a problem with the BIOS on the Intel Server Board S5000VSA. BIOS version S5000.86B.05.00.0070 from 11/17/2006 had a problem, which has been fixed in BIOS version S5000.86B.06.00.0074 from 02/02/2007. Here are Intel's release notes for BIOS R0074: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/df-support/12880/ENG/VSA_74release.txt You will note that they mention that there were problems with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The CPU IERR that RHEL 4 had, was the same problem that Debian Etch had. Once I installed BIOS R0074, Debian Etch booted easily and works fine.
