Agreed - it's not a hard and fast rule, but it should be difficult for
userspace to lock the kernel that way.

Disclaimer: I am not a munin maintainer.

That being said, it looks like you can add --debug to the munin-node-configure 
call in munin-node's postinst to get quite a bit more view into what's
happening.
