  cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/cvs/debian-doc co 
ddp/manuals.sgml/release-notes

followed by 

  cvs log

within the checkout tree.

(and since it's cvs, you get a separate cvs log for every file in the tree,
yay crappy...)
