This is a blocksize problem. I had the same problem with
package version 2.5.1p1-2.1 and a HP DAT72 usb drive.
Apparently there are several drives out there that don't
like the tape block size of 256kb that is the default
of debian amanda packages. Or maybe it's the kernel who
doesn't like it. Retry your dd-test with bs=256k.
However: recompiling amanda with
"--with-maxtapeblocksize=64" solved the problem for me.

A runtime option for setting the blocksize would be nice.
