Package: installation-reports Boot method: external CD-ROM via usb Image version: debian-31r5-i386-netinst.iso Date: 2007-03-13
Machine: IBM Thinkpad X60s Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU L2400 Memory: 512MB Partitions: none found, see problem 2 Output of lspci -nn and lspci -vnn: lspci: not found Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [O] Detect network card: [E] (I can't remember this step when booting with 2.4) Configure network: [E] Detect CD: [E] OK with linux26 Load installer modules: [ ] Detect hard drives: [E] Partition hard drives: [E] Install base system: [ ] Clock/timezone setup: [ ] User/password setup: [ ] Install tasks: [ ] Install boot loader: [ ] Overall install: [ ] Comments/Problems: there are 3 problems: 1. (minor issue) USB-CD not recognized by default: "Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted..." The CD-ROM it failed to mount is the one it was booting from: a HP dvd940e writer attached via usb. It works fine when booting with linux26. As long as 2.4 is the default I'd suggest including some hint that linux26 might be worth trying, for those who haven't got a clue about kernel versions. 2. Harddrive not recognized. The drive was recognized normally when booting from KNOPPIX 5.1: search for sda in attached knoppix.dmesg.txt. On the other hand with the debian installer the last lines of syslog are: kernel: SGI XFS with ACLs, security attributes, realtime, large block numbers, no debug enabled kernel: SGI XFS Quota Management subsystem 3. DHCP request failed. The wireless adapter was switched off by hardware. The ethernet card was connected to a DI-524 router via network cable. KNOPPIX 5.1 could establish an internet connection although I can't find messages about dhcp in any of /var/log/* (syslog has size 0) With the knoppix boot, `dmesg` mentions: eth1394: eth0: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet (fw-host0) # I think that's the internal wireless adapter # ... Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 7.2.9-k4 Copyright (c) 1999-2006 Intel Corporation. # ... e1000: 0000:02:00.0: e1000_probe: (PCI Express:2.5Gb/s:32-bit) 00:16:d3:23:a6:73 e1000: eth1: e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection # must be the wired ethernet card # ... The line starting "eth1394" appears in the dmesg for the debian-installer as well, but there it starts "ip1394". syslog contains messages about dhcp requests via eth0 which is obviously the wrong interface. Now follows knoppix.dmesg.txt. Since I can't access the hard drive, I can't provide a similarly detailed debian.dmesg.txt. ============================================================ Linux version 2.6.19 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061028 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-19)) #7 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 17 22:01:07 CET 2006 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009f000 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000d2000 - 00000000000d4000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000dc000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000001f6d0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000001f6d0000 - 000000001f6df000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 000000001f6df000 - 000000001f700000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000001f700000 - 0000000020000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000f0000000 - 00000000f4000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed00000 - 00000000fed00400 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed14000 - 00000000fed1a000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed1c000 - 00000000fed90000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee01000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ff800000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) 0MB HIGHMEM available. 502MB LOWMEM available. found SMP MP-table at 000f67f0 Entering add_active_range(0, 0, 128720) 0 entries of 256 used Zone PFN ranges: DMA 0 -> 4096 Normal 4096 -> 128720 HighMem 128720 -> 128720 early_node_map[1] active PFN ranges 0: 0 -> 128720 On node 0 totalpages: 128720 DMA zone: 32 pages used for memmap DMA zone: 0 pages reserved DMA zone: 4064 pages, LIFO batch:0 Normal zone: 973 pages used for memmap Normal zone: 123651 pages, LIFO batch:31 HighMem zone: 0 pages used for memmap DMI present.
