(Reportbug rocks!) The things that seemed different about this one were the "works if I run it with strace" aspect of it, and the fact that digikam was not complaining at all about locking. Running with strace is how I've been using it despite the lockup problem that I seeing. I can try copying my album directories to a local drive, but obviously this is at best a temporary solution and is probably not as easy a workaournd as running with strace.
