Well, that's just fascinating.  What I see in there immediately is the

  I'm still clueless about why this might happen, but it at least gives
me a clue that a race condition must exist and approximately where it
might be happening.  I also wonder if it's significant that this only
happens on the first redraw after initializing curses.  It's *not*
significant that the interleaving is at the character level: the output
is generated by curses, which apparently uses character-sized writes.
