I can't reproduce this with 3.5.5. When configuring the theme to CDE and running
konsole with system colors, the bold sections of "man man" are displayed in bold
black on light-grey background and white text.

This is certainly not visually appealing, but it's close to what I remember
about proprietary Unix desktops from university days.
