Here is the information I mistakenly missed due to setting wrong flags on command line: About 25% of the time on various of my machines gdm fails to start and it says something like "starting different greeter".
This has been occurring now for about 2-4 weeks I'd guess. I have the following in /var/log/:0.log so not really sure if gdm problem or X problem X Window System Version 7.1.1 Release Date: 12 May 2006 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1 Build Operating System: UNKNOWN Current Operating System: Linux jandi3 2.6.20final_dccp #153 PREEMPT Thu Feb 22 17:33:08 NZDT 2007 i686 Build Date: 07 March 2007 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version.
