Imho this can not really be fixed within kpowersave but must be lower down the stack. ConsoleKit [1] was specifially designed for such a scenario and will probably be supported by hal-0.5.9. Maybe kpowersave could be changed to also use ConsoleKit. I'm CCing the upstream author, Danny Kukawka, to get his opinion on this matter.
