I did as you asked and found the culprit. It's the external keypad: a Dynex Model No.: DX-NBKP20. $5.99 at BestBuy. It takes very little money to get into a lot of trouble. Better the keypad than the mice -- I'd think there would be comparatively fewer of these keypads in use. Thanks for the sleuthing and for making etch such a great release.
