If you install the "esound" package, you should be able to run "esd" and
then have sound in Dopewars.  I don't think it will pull in too much GNOME
stuff.  If that doesn't work, please tell me, I will investigate this

Well, you're probably not alone to have run into this problem.  I am
thinking of adding "esound" to the recommended package list for Dopewars and
then adding a note to README.Debian to explain that ESD needs to be running
to have sound.
