I have tested amarok with a newly-created ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc and did not configure last.fm track submission. It has been operating reliably for me ever since. I expect that this means that something is misconfigured on my system (e.g. proxy settings), but it still shouldn't cause the application to hang.
