You should be aware that a bug of hal (#287407) breaks the behaviour of gvm with the usb-storage devices. This prevents me to auto-mount external usb devices with gvm. The maintainer of hal doesn't think to fix the bug soon. To restore the situation I have to add user 'hal' to the 'disk' group (and reboot).
