Please show the complete /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules
and the output of udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/eth0.101 .

The DRIVERS=="?*" statement in the rules file is supposed to prevent
renaming the vlan subinterfaces and indeed it used to do so when I first
added it.

The _rename thing happens when udev tries to change the name of an
interface to one which is already in use. It can be argued that it
should change back the name instead of keeping the temporary one, but I
do not have the time to change this right now (does anybody want to
help?).
