Hmm. If /usr/bin/play is changing to a binary (it's still a script on my testing/Etch system) then it should probably be executed through esddsp:

$ esddsp /usr/bin/play "file.wav"

I thought the point of the "play" script was that whichever system was controlling sound would make sure it plays a sound. Is there a preferred sound system yet in Debian? ALSA? PulseAudio? Jack?

(BTW, the "-t raw -r 44100 -sw -c 2" was esd's preferred settings if no others were specified. That way if --method was used, then it got at least /some/ sensible defaults! Esd would convert the format too if it didn't match the system setting. B-)
