Yes, it does look like a kernel problem.
Your best chance is to do the following:
- google to see if you can find any information about the issue
- check if you can still reproduce the problem using the latest upstream
  kernel from http://www.linuxhq.com/kernel/v2.6/
- report a bug with the kernel developers on http://bugzilla.kernel.org/
